General Education Outcomes: Overview

YCCC's Definition of an Educated Person

The Educated Person has the knowledge, skills and values to lead a thoughtful, creative and productive life. This person is a life-long learner; seeks self-knowledge and understanding of others and the world; actively engages in the community and civic life and shows tolerance and respect for cultural, ethnic and intellectual diversity.

The General Education core requirement in each degree program embodies the College's definition of an educated person and is integral to the educational and professional development of students. Students undertake General Education studies in a variety of disciplines and fields, including communications, arts and humanities, social and behavioral studies, natural sciences, and mathematics.

The eight learning domains of the General Education core are assessed on a 5-year cycle, using rubrics developed in collaboration with our sister Maine community colleges.  Results are presented to the Maine Community College System's Board of Trustees and are available on the Results & Reports page.
