NoodleBib: Getting started

An online tool to help you create your bibliographies in MLA or APA format.

What is Noodlebib

Noodlebib is a tool to help you create citations & a bibliography for your research projects.

A Few Definitions:

A bibliography is a list of the books, articles, websites, videos, and other sources you used.

A citation is a reference to ONE of the books, articles, websites, video clips, and other sources that you used. A citation MAY include the author, title, publisher, date, journal title, url, etc.

An in-text citation is a brief notation within the text of your paper or presentation which refers to the source in your bibliography.


Be sure to login to Noodlebib from the YCCC Library Website: in the Useful tools box.

You can sign in with your personal username and password if you have already an account.

Or if this is your first time using NoodleBib, you can set up a new account by selecting "Register." Make certain you select an account linked to a school/library. You'll need to get the password from us. Follow the instructions and choose a personal ID and password to access your account in the future


Follow the steps to using Noodlebib by clicking on the tabs above starting with New project.

Once you have signed in you’ll be taken to the “My Projects” page.


CLICK on the green New project tab on the top right-hand side. Here you will name your project, select the citation style you need to use (APA, MLA) and your citation level should always be Advanced to have more options.

By clicking submit you'll be at the Dashboard. These are all optional features – so we’ll go directly to "Add sources" at the top of the screen to add citations.

On the Sources page click the green + Create New Citation button 

You'll be asked 2 questions:

Select where you got your source: a database (most of the Library's online resources), a website, a print or in-hand source, etc.

Select the type of source you have: a journal article, a book, a video, website, etc.

If you already have a properly formatted citation copied from many of the Library's online resources, click the Copy and Paste a Citation link near the upper left corner of the page. Paste your citation into the “manually edited citation” box and click Submit.

If you don’t have a citation yet, you will have to enter in the data yourself, using the form provided. Record the information you can find..This applies mostly to websites. When you are done, click “Submit”.

Once you have your citations created, they will appear in alphabetical order (as shown in the image below), and even after you have created them, you have the option to go back and edit them. You can also delete them, and using the tools under "options" you can also see what the parenthetical, or in-text, citation will look like for that source.

When you are ready to print or save your bibliography:

  • Click “Print/Export
  • Select Print/Export to Word, or whatever file format you prefer.
  • When the file download message appears on the status bar, click it to open the file.
  • A properly formatted and spaced bibliography will open in your word processing software.
  • Print as you would any other document, or you can copy and paste it into your research paper and print it that way.

Review of the steps for using Noodlebib

  1. Create or Sign in to your Noodlebib account.
  2. Click on +New Project.
  3. Enter a project title, select a Citation style (APA or MLA) and select Advanced for the Citation Level.
  4. This will take you to the Dashboard, but click on the Sources tab at the top of the page to begin adding citations.
  5. Click on +Create a new citation.
  6. Answer the questions about your resource and complete the form or copy and paste a citation - double check it for accuracy.
  7. Click on Submit.
  8. To add more citations, repeat steps 6-8.
  9. To create/print your works cited page for your paper, click on Print/Export in the toolbar and select an option (e.g., Print/Export to Word).
