  • What happens when I file my taxes?
  • Why does my tax bracket matter?
  • What is the difference between a tax deduction and a tax credit?
  • How long will it take for the world population to double? And is there a point where the growth can’t be sustained?
  • What is a good survey question? What does it mean if it has bias?
  • How do I read a graph? What are the important elements of a graph?

MAT 124: STATISTICS

Although many students think statistics is all about finding the mean, median and mode or creating a pie graph, there are many more questions to explore. In this class, you will learn:

  • What are the key elements of a good graph?
  • What is the probability of a false positive test result?
  • What is the probability that a baby is born 2 days past its due date?

  • How could you determine what warranty to offer on tires if you don’t want to replace more than 10% of tires?
  • What range of Body Mass Index are most people in?
  • How many people would I need to survey to determine if 83% of US families eat fast food at least once per week?
  • How to use a sample to determine if published claims are accurate
  • Can we determine braking distance based on a vehicle’s weight?
  • Is there a correlation between the years of experience and nurse salaries?

MEET YOUR PROFESSOR
Melissa Dubovik profile picture

Melissa Dubovik (teaches both 118 and 124)

Melissa only teaches online sections as she is a math teacher at one of our local high schools. If you are lucky enough to zoom with her, you will often see her kitty, Charlotte who is a little of a screen hog or the howls of one of the four dogs. When not teaching, Melissa has been working on building her own home. She is getting pretty good at painting and installed wood floors.

Sam Kelley profile picture

Sam Kelley (teaches both 118 and 124)

Sam is a Minnesota native, where as a kid he was sure he was going to become a paleontologist as he loved all things dinosaurs. However, his first job as a teenager was as a chef. He loves all games (video, card, board, role-playing, and sport). Please don’t hold the fact that the Vikings are his favorite team or that he has made his daughters Vikings fans against him. When not teaching, you might find Sam at a Korn concert.

Jen Mallett profile picture

Jen Mallett (teaches 118)

Although she now considers Maine home, she moved about every 1.5 years as a kid, which resulted in lots of new homes and schools. She was unsuccessful in passing down her love for 80’s rock to her kids but is hoping her grandson will enjoy it with her. She has spent the last few summers RV’ing in the Lakes region. Now that travel restrictions have been lifted, Jen hopes to travel more. When not teaching, Jen likes to watch movies, usually a romcom or good drama but she is always open to rewatching Star Wars.

Amy Regan profile picture

Amy Regan (teaches both 118 and 124)

Math is just one of the things Amy does for fun. When not teaching or coaching, she is either adventuring or planning her next adventure. She made a must-do list several years ago and has been steadily crossing items off the list. It’s time to make a new one! Adventures include hiking and trail running, trips to national parks, paddleboarding, and skiing (either snow or water!). Less adventuresome fun includes baking and gardening. She can be found every morning walking with dogs and friends on a local beach, rain or shine.

Stephanie Herbert profile picture

Stephanie Herbert (teaches 118)

Stephanie taught in Massachusetts for eight years until moving to Maine. She loves to be outdoors. Whether it is taking her dog for a walk in the woods, playing in the sand at the beach with her boys, or just spending time in her backyard with her family-- she will take any and every opportunity to be outside. Stephanie also loves working with students and helping them find success in a subject they might need help in

Kelly Crowley profile picture

Kelly Crowley (teaches both 118 and 124)

When referencing the normal model, Kelly says to always skew it! Besides enjoying terrible math puns, Kelly enjoys spending her time in her kayak on the water, skiing in the mountains, walking her dog in the woods, and reading a good book. Though these are some of her favorite things to do, most of her time is spent with her adorable young children and spending quality time with them. She can most often be found spectating swimming lessons, softball games, taekwondo practices, and dance recitals.

Z Cameo Johnson-Cramer profile picture

Z Cameo Johnson-Cramer (teaches 124)

Cameo has lived in 9 states. In 3rd grade, she was the school’s representative to be on TV and hand over the donations we raised to Ronald McDonald for the Jerry Lewis telethon. Now, she enjoys selling things on eBay for a local non-profit’s thrift store.

Wanda Kezar profile photo

Wanda Kezar (teaches 118)

Wanda Kezar loves spending time having new adventures. In her spare time, you can find her wielding power tools to build a stage set, hiking with her friends, family, and dog, or snuggling a bunny while reading or writing a book. She is excited to be a new member of the math team at YCCC.
