The Student Success Commons at York County Community College: Writing

A Message from Sue, the Writing Tutor

"If you say it out loud, or you write it down, or you type it out—that's something that the writing tutor can help you with. Whether it's a discussion board post...formatting your references... finding resources for a paper, or even just coming up with an idea for a paper or speech—any of those things those are things that I can help you with. There's really nothing too small or too large. I'm not going to edit your paper from top to bottom, but we can talk about big ideas, what types of things you can do to fix your paper, or maybe just you need a confidence boost to say that your paper is looking good.

I can point you in the right direction and get you where you need to be."

Writing tutoring FAQ

When is tutoring available?

Tutoring is available with Sue Zimmer by appointment, either on campus or remotely, Monday-Friday. Please allow up to 48 hours for a reply via email between Monday 9:00am and Friday 12:00pm.

What can a writing tutor do?

A lot! Writing tutoring applies to ANY writing, whether it's a discussion post in a math class, a speech in oral communications, an essay in psychology, and more!

Let's talk about it!  When you meet with a writing tutor, they will discuss your ideas and how to best express your thoughts in writing. If you have an idea but aren't sure how to run with it, a writing tutor can help. Have no ideas? A writing tutor can help with that, too!

Revise--you know you want to: Depending on your assignment, you will get feedback about the organization, tone, thesis, citations and more.  Every piece of writing can be revised so be prepared to hear that your work is not perfect yet. You'll be able to use the feedback from your tutor to increase the quality of your writing,

They won't "edit" your work:  Tutors want you to become the best writer you can be, and it takes a lot of practice to write well.  To that end, tutors will decline to "edit" your paper, but they will provide you with excellent feedback and actionable ideas! A writing tutor will be able to point you in the right direction.

Citation style:  Whether it's MLA or APA, they can help you understand citation style!

Reliable references:  If you need to find resource material check in with your writing tutor!

How do I connect with a writing tutor?

Email Sue Zimmer any day, any time (please allow up to 48 hours for a reply) and feel free to ask for an appointment. You can also send over information about your assignment, any concerns you have, and if you have a draft you'd like help with attach it as a Word Document! The more information you provide the more efficiently a tutor can help.

How long is a tutoring appointment?

Tutoring appointments are up to one hour long each. Students may book a maximum of one appointment per week. If you would like more help, please reach out to Sue.

Who qualifies for writing tutoring?
